The Santa Barbara Boys Water Polo Invitational turns five years old this weekend as 24 high school teams vie for the tournament championship. Matches are being held at Santa Barbara High School, San Marcos High School and Dos Pueblos.
The tournament lineup will feature many of the top teams in CIF-ss Division 1. Among them will be Mater Dei and Harvard-Westlake, both of which faced off in last year’s championship game that resulted in a 10-8 decision in favor of Harvard-Westlake. That result put an end to Mater Dei’s previous three-year title streak.
Both those teams return with No. 1 seeds this year. Loyola and Orange Lutheran are the other top seeds. The four No. 1 seeds are the top-four ranked teams in Division 1. Laguna Beach, Division 3’s No. 1 team, is in Group D with Orange Lutheran. Righetti, the No. 1 team in Division 4, is in Group A with Harvard-Westlake. The tournament field also includes San Diego’s Cathedral Catholic and Northern California powers Campolindo, Acalanes and Miramonte.
The top two teams in each group receive byes on Thursday and will play their first matches on Friday.
The local host schools all have matches on Thursday.
The championship will be decided on Saturday at Dos Pueblos High School in a match scheduled for 2:25 p.m.
