MWP: Whitelegge plays huge in UCSB victory

Goalie Chris Whitelegge made 18 saves, and sixth-ranked UCSB spread its scoring around and defeated No. 8 UC Irvine 11-7 in a MPSF men’s water polo match on Saturday at Campus Pool.

Whitelegge played a brilliant match, helping the Gauchos improve their records to 3-2 in the MPSF and 16-6 overall. Among his 18 saves, were two on 5-meter penalty shots.

Offensively, four Gauchos tallied two goals, and a total of seven players scored.

Kevin Cappon keyed a three-goal run in the third period to extend a 6-4 lead to 9-4. Cappon, Eric Van de Mortel, Derek Shoemaker and Nicolas Jordan each scored two goals. Bojan Hrlec scored three goals to lead UC Irvine (11-9, 0-4).

UCSB does it have much time to celebrate the win as it heads to Palo Alto on Sunday to face fourth-ranked Stanford.
