WWP: LBSU knocks down Gauchos

LONG BEACH – No. 13 UC Santa Barbara (19-12, 2-4), was unable to overcome No. 9 Long Beach State (25-5, 4-2) with a 9-5 loss on Sunday.

Senior Shelby Haroldson achieved her 100th career goal as a Gaucho.

Long Beach State opened the game with an early 2-0 lead within four minutes of play. Freshman Bryn Hudson and senior Rachel Nelson responded with two goals for the Gauchos to tie the game 2-2 after the first quarter.

Once again, the 49ers opened the second quarter with two goals to take the lead 4-2. Senior Kacey Creek was able to lessen their lead with a goal only a minute after Long Beach scored. Unfortunately, 20 seconds later the 49ers were able to capture another goal. With 0:42 to play in the second quarter, Shelby Haroldson tallied her 100th career goal with the Gauchos to make the game a tight 5-4 score to end the first half.

The Gauchos were able to score one last goal by sophomore Jade Wentz-Fitzgerald in the third quarter to trail behind the 49ers 7-5 at the end of the third quarter. UCSB was never able to take the lead and ended the game behind the 49ers, 9-5.

UCSB will end their Big West Conference campaign Friday, April 19 against No. 14 Cal State Northridge at Northridge at 4 p.m.
