WWP: Gauchos beat Tritons, fall to 49ers

LA JOLLA  – The Gauchos earned a thrilling 12-11 win over No. 19 UC San Diego in sudden death overtime before suffering a tight loss to Long Beach State 9-7.

Freshman Jessie Porter led the Gauchos offensively as the top scorer while senior Ruth Milne notched 11 saves for the Gauchos in their first game against UC San Diego.

UCSD was able to gain the lead in the first quarter, scoring their first goal within two minutes. SophomoreClaryann Olofsson-Loo responded with a quick goal for the Gauchos. The Tritons answered with another goal to take the lead of 2-1 after the first quarter.

The second quarter flew by with very little action as both teams only scored two goals apiece, ending the first half tied 4-4.

UC Santa Barbara started the second half amped up, with senior Rachel Nelson and freshman Bryn Hudsonearning two quick goals in three minutes. UCSD reacted to gain another goal before the Gauchos fired in another one to end the third quarter with UCSB up 7-5.

UC San Diego recorded two goals starting the fourth quarter, and the game went back and forth from there. The game ended with both teams tied at 9-9. During the first quarter of overtime, both teams scored two goals. Freshman Jessie Porter scored all three of her goals during overtime to give the Gauchos their victory over No. 19 UC San Diego, 12-11.

With a win under their belt, the Gauchos took on Long Beach State University and opened the game with three goals to take the lead after the first quarter. UCSB didn’t stop there, as they continued their lead at the half 6-3.

The 49ers came back after half with two goals in the third quarter, while the Gauchos were unable to score until the fourth quarter. The 49ers took the lead in the fourth quarter tallying two goals within two minutes. Freshman Samantha Murphy was able to fire another goal past the 49ers, but despite the effort the Gauchos fell to Long Beach State University 7-9.

UC Santa Barbara will continue its season February 23-24 as they head down to Irvine for the UCI Invite.
