UCSB’s Milne, Haroldson named All-Big West

UCSB's Ruth Milne broke the career saves record this season for the Gauchos.

Juniors Ruth Milne and Shelby Haroldson were named 2012 All-Big West Conference selections it was announced by the league’s office today. Milne garnered First Team honors while Haroldson was named to the Second Team.

Milne was one of two goalkeepers that received honors from the conference and the only to be named to the All-Big West First Team. The Redwood City, Calif. native is a three-time all-league pick after earning Honorable Mention accolades as a freshman and Second Team honors as a sophomore.

The junior was the Gauchos’ defensive backbone this season. She started all 25 games and posted a school-record 405 saves. She averaged 12.0 saves per game and 7.4 goals against. Early in the year, she surpassed the school record for saves and currently holds a three-year total of 984. Milne had 20 games with double digit saves during the year, including a season-best 22 against Cal State Northridge (Jan. 28).

Her placement on the All-Big West Second Team marks Haroldson’s first career honor from the league. The junior proved to be a huge asset on both ends of the ball this season. She posted 34 goals, which was fourth on the team, including nine multiple goal games. She scored in all but one of the Gauchos’ Big West regular season games, including the golden goal in the marathon match-up with Long Beach State (March 31).

The playmaker posted a team-leading 63 assists and 64 steals while also drawing 20 ejections and tallying eight field blocks.

The UCSB women’s water polo team finished the season with a 20-15 overall record. The Gauchos took third in the regular season Big West standings with a 3-2 league mark; they finished fourth at last weekend’s championship tournament.
