Warriors beat Malibu for first time; tie for first place

Carpinteria pulled off one of its biggest wins in girls water polo on Wednesday, knocking off perennial power Malibu on the road, 10-5, in a Tri-Valley League game.

Maddie Brooks scored five goals and goalie Vanessa Villa made nine saves in the Warriors’ first-ever win over the Sharks, who hadn’t lost a league game in several years.

“When we played them up here we were up 7-5 in the fourth period and lost 8-7,” Carpinteria coach Bryan Swarm said. “After that game, the girls said, ’We can play with them.’ ”

The Warriors (13-6, 5-1) played outstanding defense, holding the Sharks scoreless in the first half.

“It was a fantastic effort on defense,” said Swarm. “It was a great win for the program.”

Swarm added: “If we can take care of business the rest of the way, we can share the league championship.”
