Two losses for UCSB at Spartan Invitational

No. 17 UC Santa Barbara (2-2) suffered its first losses of the 2012 season on Saturday as the Gauchos fell to No. 16 UC Davis (1-0) and San Jose State (2-0), 12-8, during their opening games at San Jose State’s Spartan Invitational.

In the first game of the day, the Aggies climbed out to a 6-3 advantage by halftime and a four-goal third quarter pushed their lead to 10-5 heading into the final stanza.

The Gauchos outscored their opponent, 3-2, in the final eight minutes, but were unable to overcome the Aggies, falling 12-8.

Freshman Bernadette Bevins led the Gauchos with a hat trick. Sophomore Molly Hafferkamp added two goals for the UCSB offensive effort. In goal, Ruth Milne tallied six saves.

The Gauchos struggled early in their second game as well, falling behind 10-2 by halftime. UCSB was able to outscore the Spartans, 6-2, in the back half, but couldn’t overcome the overwhelming deficit.

Hafferkamp once again tallied two goals while Shelby Haroldson and Bryce Winton each also chipped in two during the loss. Milne posted a season-high 10 saves in the goal.

UCSB continues action at the Spartan Invitational on Sunday at 8 a.m. against Fraser Valley (from Canada). The Gauchos will wrap up tourney action against No. 2 Cal at 1:00 p.m.
