San Marcos unable to overcome slow start

The San Marcos girls water polo team continued to play a tough non-league schedule and faced Montebello, the fourth ranked team in Division II CIF. The Royals started slow and were unable to overcome a 7-2 halftime deficit and lost at home 13-8.

Hannah Koper turned in a dominant performance for San Marcos, scoring four goals on seven shots, and drawing four ejections.

Koper sparked and led a run in the third period that pulled the Royals back into the game. Down 7-2 at half, San Marcos put in five goals in the third quarter (three of them by Koper) and were down 10-7 heading into the fourth.

Ashley Wagner also had an excellent game and scored two goals. Riley Heiduk and Natalie Chilton were the other goalscorers for the Royals.

Montebello was able to exploit gaps in the San Marcos defense in the fourth quarter and hold on to its lead.

The Royals (1-3 Channel League, 4-9 overall) will continue their season on Tueaday at home against Santa Barbara.
