Fourth-quarter surge pushes Carp past Cate

The crosstown rivalry game between the Cate School and Carpinteria High girls water polo teams was not devoid of drama, and the match was tied 4-4 going into the fourth quarter. A late run from Carpinteria was the deciding factor in its 8-5 victory.

“It’s a big rivalry match for us, it is always a good game,” Warriors head coach Bryan Swarm said. “We’re happy to come out on top.”

Maddie Brooks led Carpinteria with three goals. Hope Grant and Leticia Cruz each had two goals, and Tatiana Verdugo scored one as well.

Goalkeeper Vanessa Vega turned in an impressive game and recorded 15 saves.

For Cate, Lela Puckett had an inspired performance in the goal. The senior captain provided stability and leadership for her squad and finished with nine saves.

The Warriors trailed the Rams 3-2 at halftime, and were able to outscore the visitors 2-1 to tie the game heading into the final period. This set up a monster fourth quarter for Carpinteria, and they outscored Cate 4-1 to earn the victory.

Cate will continue its season at Malibu on Wednesday.

Carpinteria improved to 9-6 on the season and 2-1 in the Tri-Valley League and will play next on Wednesday at Nordhoff.
