Carpinteria's Cole Gell uncorks a shot on San Marcos

San Marcos featured three different scorers with four goals each on Thursday, using its offense to hold back visiting Carpinteria 18-3.

Ben Battles, Keyvan Golizadeth and Kam Bebb pitched in four goals each for the Royals, who are out to a 3-0 start to the season. Spencer Kemp added three more.

Cole Gell scored two of the Warriors’ three goals, with Ben O’Hara tallying the other.

“They were way more physical than in years past,” said Royals head coach Jeff Ashton, who thought the Warriors played a strong first half.

“If we do nothing else, we want to play aggressively,” said Carpinteria head coach Bryan Swarm, whose team doesn’t have a single senior.

It was the second of back-to-back games against Channel League teams for the Warriors, who lost to Buena the day before, and Carpinteria wore down as the match progressed.

The Warriors (0-2) were able to keep it close in the first quarter and only trailed 6-2 at halftime before the Royals created separation in the second half. Carpinteria moves on to its home opener next Tuesday against Camarillo.

San Marcos (3-0) also plays again on Tuesday, hosting Oxnard at 3:15 p.m.
