Chargers waste little time in downing Dons

It was 6-0 after just one quarter on Tuesday in a battle of ranked boys water polo teams at Santa Barbara High.

Fifth-ranked Dos Pueblos, led by five goals from Derek Shoemaker and two penalty-shot saves by goalie Brady Moore, dominated the No. 9 Dons in a 15-4 victory.

Chase Racich added a four goals and Kevin Cappon had three for the Chargers, who are now 12-2 overall and 2-0 in the Channel League.

Santa Barbara’s first goal came on a beautiful long-distance shot by Preston Schlagel with 4:16 remaining in the second quarter that made it 7-1, and Nic Johnson added three more in the second half from close range.

Moore had an outstanding game, picking up three stops in one possession at one point in the first quarter. He finished with nine saves, five blocks and an assist, while Santa Barbara goalie Sean McGee had 10 saves.

The Dons were missing two starters due to injury, and Dos Pueblos is dealing with a key injury of its own after Christian Terpening ruptured his eardrum earlier in the week and will miss the rest of the regular season.

Evan Robertson’s defense led to five ejections drawn for the Dons, but it was stifling defense down low by the Chargers that kept the Dons from finding the back of the net more often.

Santa Barbara (11-6, 2-1) plays at Ventura and DP hosts Buena on Thursday afternoon.
