Lakey’s Lines: Let’s get this thing going

Hey Guys! Let’s Get This Going…

Hi, I’m Lakey. I’m super excited to be starting this blog where I can talk about surfing, the thing I love to do most. The last year of my life has been really exciting for me, so hopefully I will have some fun stories to share.

Ever since I was five years old I loved all sports, but primarily surfing. I learned to surf in Australia in the year 2000, when my parents took my family and me around the world for six months! I loved Australia because the people were and still are so nice and the water is so warm; plus it helps that the waves are always good!

I started doing competitions when I was 11 and ever since i’ve been hooked. It is not like a sport I have ever done, in a good way. I mean, come on, I get to go to the beach with all of my friends and surf for a living! If you can name something better I will be impressed.

Now I am 15 years old and this is my 4th year competing. Most of the contests that I do are The National Scholastic Surfing Association contests (NSSA). I also am a part of the USA Pac-Sun Surf Team.

You’re probably thinking, “what is that?

Basically it is all of the top young surfers from the US and at the end of the year they take a team within the team to go compete in the ISA World Junior Games. Last year I had the opportunity to go to Ecuador. And the ISA world junior games is all of the top surfers from every country! So to say that I was a little nervous would be an understatement. This year, I hope to go with the team again to compete in New Zealand in January. We’ll get to that later.

Also earlier this summer I competed in the NSSA  Nationals at Lower Trestles. What that is, is all of the top junior surfers in America. It is a great event and in my opinion, it’s at the best surf break in southern California. Unfortunately, from what I hear, this year was the last year NSSA Nationals will be there. I ended up winning this year’s contest with an aerial in the finals. I became the first female surfer to ever do an air in that competition!

Since then I’ve been up to no good, just surfing everyday and training a lot in the gym.

***One thing I’ll be doing with this blog is trying to deliver some surfing news. Adriano de Souza just won the Billabong Pro in Mundaka, Spain. Bobby Martinez, Santa Barbara’s rep on the WCT tour, won it in 2006 and 2007. Bobby did not end up winning, but he surfed great! The wave just didnt match his style. Here’s some video highlights from his third round heat.

Some of the guys on tour right now are ridiculously good and Bobby is one of them! Check the updated season rankings on tour (Bobby’s in 8th).

Ok, thanks for reading! I’ll be back soon!
