WeissCrax author Randy Weiss checked out Santa Claus Lane to find some writing inspiration.

A best friend no doubt: Cooper is always up for a trip to the beach.
It’s Deadline Day for my Presidiosports.com sportz column …. and “I’ve got nothin’” to quote my golfing friend, Matt Keenan – a one-handicapper who usually does “have something”.
Me? I’m in serious trouble….
Can’t imagine how embarrassing it would be getting fired from a volunteer writing gig!
All my esteemed literary colleagues – especially those Montecito Journal ‘funny guys’– Jim Alexander and Ernie Witham, would likely laugh their you-know-whats off – and that’s alotta laughing!
So, I gotta work some magic here but first, it’s off to the beach – the only way to start a day right.
And it seems like Cooper, my four-year-old Golden Retriever, already knows. As soon as I slip on my running shorts – he bolts for the front door. His tail wagging like crazy!
Once in the car, it’s Peet’s Coffee (for me) and a jelly donut (we share) to unleash the hopefully-potent creative writing juices.

En route to Santa Claus Lane – (aka The World’s Best Beach) a funny thing — summer happens!
WHOA!!
Not the marine layer stuff. Or the record-sizzling September heat.

Rick Rew tends to his garden at SCL
No, ‘real summer’ – a warm, beautiful, sunny day, starting with clear skies at dawn.
And not bad for October & Columbus Day Weekend…
Upon arrival, there’s Rick Rew, a Navy vet and his dog, Cheesecake, by The Peace Tree that graces the beach entrance. We get a quick tour. Incredible!! They generously donate a few hours daily, planting, clearing the underbrush and transforming these gardens. Check it out for yourself sometime………

HEY, IT’S ME, COOPS. I’M TAKING OVER, HERE…
IT’S NOW AFTER 8PM AND ‘MR. WEISSCRAX’ IS NOW FAST ASLEEP ON THE COUCH.
Oops, that’s better…sorry about the capital letters – my paw hit the CAPS LOCK key.

Cooper in action
I heard him say something about playing golf late this afternoon and then stopping at Harry’s Plaza for an adult beverage.
What wuz he thinking? And with a deadline?! Hello??
Guess that explains everything here…
Well, he left his laptop on. It’s lying on the floor. Thought best to lend him a paw …
Anyway, the Stick Fetch was sooo awesome!
Had a blast, like always!
It was early – not even 8AM. Nobody else around – which is all right by me.
It’s like a surfer finding the perfect spot – awesome scenery, great waves & no-crowds.
There ‘ain’t nuttin’ more better’ than chasing after sticks in the water!
LOVE THOSE STICKS!! LOVE THAT OCEAN!!
(Hey, I also love that shift key now…)
It all starts with finding the best equipment.
I’m talking THE STICK.
And ‘the bigger, the better’ – as a far as I’m concerned!
Today – good news: a nice size stick (Psst: It’s even bigger than ‘Cheesecake.’)
There are decent waves and only a few joggers and stand-up paddlers in sight.
PERFECTO!!
I go over the waves.
I go through the waves
Whatever it takes!
Then, I surf the waves coming back in…
COWABUNGA!!
I sometimes hear people marvel at my ability…
They say – “WOW! YOUR DOG IS AMAZING!!”
And The Boss always sez back: “He’s an animal.”
He’s so funny!
I think I could fetch forever…
But, after 8,721 times – his arm finally tires.
Overall — an incredible morning! And while my best friend later played some golf – I slept all afternoon!
Or working “Homeland Security” as he calls it.
Anyway, I better wrap this up and email ‘this puppy’ in so he can make his publication deadline.
Can’t imagine the surprised look on his mug when he sees this on-line!!
Hey – I’m happy to help out — what are best friends for? (Note-to-self: He’s OK, too).
Gotta run!! I wanna read Lakey Peterson’s surf column (my fave, actually) before he wakes up!
Ciao, Coops

A stand-up-paddle boarder comes in for a closer look at this unusual marine mammal.
