San Marcos’ first game of the season turned out to become its first ever victory over Foothill as well. The Royals defeated the visiting Knights 7-5 with a strong second half.
Down at the break, San Marcos outscored Foothill 5-2 in the second half. Paige Hauschild, a junior who played in a few games for the USA Senior National Team this year, led the Royals in scoring with three goals. Senior Kate Coski, a UCSB commit, added two goals. Another UCSB commit, Hailey Gellert, played great defense at two meters while goalie Sophia Trumbull blocked eight shots. Sarah Owens and Brittany Prentice also scored.
San Marcos is ranked No. 4 and Foothill No. 2 in the preseason CIF Division 1 poll.
“I am very proud of this group and I am happy where we are beginning the season. We have a lot to work on however we are starting off ahead of where we have started in years past,” said Royals head coach Chuckie Roth.
San Marcos’ next game is against Huntington Beach on Thursday at the Villa Park Tournament.
