WBK: Vaqueros grab consolation title at Glendale Tournament

Kay Phosakham scored 18 points on near-perfect shooting and SBCC hit 54.5 percent from the field on Saturday to defeat Antelope Valley 76-65 and claim the consolation title of the Glendale Lady Vaquero Women’s Basketball Shootout.

Destinee King had a double-double with 16 points and 14 rebounds and earned all-tournament honors. Kesler Johnson added 14 points and eight boards while Jeanie Pattison collected 11 points, seven rebounds, six assists and three steals.

Phosakham, a 5-6 guard from Portland, Oregon, made 7-of-8 field goals and 4-4 from 3-point country. SBCC hit 6-12 from downtown and held the Marauders (1-4) to 31 percent shooting, including 2-19 from the 3-point line.

The Vaqueros (3-4) won the third quarter 20-14 and took a 10-point lead (60-50) into the last quarter. They also won the battle of the boards 49-31.

“What a great, great win,” said coach Sandrine Krul. “We played hard for 40 minutes and defeated a very big and athletic team. Our fast break is what got us these wins the last two days.

“Jeanie had to stop a talented bounceback from Mississippi (Destini Price) and she did a very good job on her.”

Elissa Root added eight points, five rebounds and four of her team’s 24 assists. Jocelin Petatan had seven points, seven assists and four rebounds.

The Vaqueros return to action on Thursday, Dec. 3 in the Santa Ana Tournament where they’ll take on Merced at 6 p.m.
