The Santa Barbara Special Olympics volleyball team won a tournament in Santa Maria.

Santa Barbara Special Olympics field a volleyball team for the first time in several years this fall.

Coached by Dos Pueblos varsity player Cat Hogan, Hanna Merrill and former DP girls volleyball coach Todd Garrett, the six-person team took first in its division at tournament in Santa Maria.

Team members were Chris Charest, Ramon Hooper, Abraham Moreno, Aaron Stubbs, Bethanny “B” McClellan and Stefan Pitruzzelli.

“Because the team was so small this year, we will not be able to compete in the L.A.Games on Nov. 14-15,” said Garrett. “Hopefully, the word gets out and we can recruit more athletes for next fall. We had an absolute blast and everyone really improved.”

Garrett and Special Olympics thanked the  Santa Barbara Unified School District and Dos Pueblos High for providing a facility for the team to practice.
