GLF: SBCC’s Chang claims WSC title

SBCC’s Carolin Chang shot 78 for the second straight day to claim the WSC Women’s Golf title on a rainy Monday at the Alisal River Course in Solvang.

The freshman from Taiwan beat Janette Chan (79-78) of Bakersfield by a stroke. Chang was named the WSC Player of the Year. She captured four WSC events and was the runner-up three times. She’s won six tournaments this year.

Vanesa Villa, the only sophomore on the Vaquero roster, tied for third at 160 with Lexandra So (82-78) of Citrus and Jamie Lopez of Citrus (75-85). Villa, a Dos Pueblos High product, shot 77 and 83.

The Vaqueros won the WSC team title, shooting 333 in WSC No. 9 and 655 for the 36-hole WSC Finals. SBCC topped Citrus by 12 strokes in the Finals. Citrus was second in WSC No. 9 at 340 and totaled 667 for the two-day tourney.

The Vaqueros finished WSC play at 39-6 with Citrus 3 games back at 36-9 and Canyons 6 games behind at 33-12. Santa Barbara won the last four WSC tourneys and has nine wins on the year.

The Vaqueros, Citrus and Canyons all advanced to the Southern Cal Regional, which will be played on the same Alisal River Course on Sunday and Monday. The top two teams out of seven will advance to the State Championships at Morro Bay GC on Nov. 15-16.

Isabella Doub, who shot 85-85–170 in the WSC Finals, was named first-team All-WSC along with teammate Miraya Ramirez (82-90–172).

It was the sixth WSC title for the Vaqueros since 2004 and their first since 2013. They won State Championships in 2006, 2008 and 2013.

“It was windy at the start of the round and then it was misty and rainy for the other 75 percent,” said coach Chuck Melendez, whose team is 71-6 overall. “It was a difficult day and I’m proud of how our team responded.

“It feels good to be WSC champs again after an off-year last year. It’s nice to climb back in the saddle.”
