SBCC built a 9-1 halftime lead on Wednesday, then held off L.A. Pierce for a 10-6 WSC women’s water polo victory in Woodland Hills.
Kendra Carr had two goals and two assists on a day when eight Vaqueros got in the scoring column. Alex Fleischman added two goals for SBCC, which won for the seventh time in nine games to improve to 12-9 overall and 4-1 in conference. Pierce is winless at 0-7 and 0-5.
The Vaqueros moved into sole possession of second place behind L.A. Valley (6-0). Cuesta and Citrus are tied for third at 4-2.
“I was very happy with our intensity throughout the game,” said coach Chuckie Roth. “Pierce made some shots in the last quarter but we held our composure to pull out the win. Demi Ames (7 saves) played very well in goal.
“We had great balance on offense. I think this win will give us some confidence going into this weekend’s Battle at the Beach.”
The Vaqueros will play in the 24-team Battle at the Beach with games at three sites – Long Beach, Cerritos and Cypress. The Vaqueros open against Grossmont on Friday at 9:10 a.m. at Cerritos and will play another pool-play game later in the day.
