GVB: Owls get tested by Viewpoint

The first of two tough non-league matches this week for Laguna Blanca’s girls volleyball team didn’t go the Owls’ way on Thursday as Viewpoint took the match 25-16, 25-15, 25-23.

Viewpoint is the No. 4-ranked team in CIF Division 2A and Laguna Blanca is ranked No. 4 in Division 4AA. Cate, the Owls’ next opponent on Saturday, is ranked No. 1 in Division 4A. Laguna Blanca, which has the Condor League championship all but locked up, has scheduled tough non-league matches to prepare for playoffs.

“The match was closer than the score dictated,” said Laguna Blanca head coach Jason Donnelly. “We gave up a few big runs, but we had our chances, especially in the 3rd game. We competed at a high level tonight and saw some things we haven’t seen before.”

Phoebe Madsen’s 11 kills were a team high, while Caylin Zimmerman had a balanced night with seven kills and 11 digs.

Saturday’s match at Cate begins at 3 p.m.
