Carpinteria’s Garcia, Laguna’s Madsen earn Athlete of Week honors

Phoebe Madsen and Oscar Garcia stepped up and made big plays to help their respective teams record momentum-building wins over the weekend. Their performances earned them Santa Barbara Athletic Round Table Athlete of the Week honors.

Madsen led Laguna Blanca to a four-set win over CIF Division 4A No. 1-ranked Cate in a battle of small-school volleyball powers. The senior blasted 21 kills, had 17 digs and served four aces for the Owls, who are ranked No. 4 in Division 4AA.

Garcia returned an interception 84 yards for a touchdown and had a 64-yard run that set up the go-ahead touchdown in Carpinteria’s 25-6 win at Nordhoff. It was the Warriors’ first win over the Rangers since 2008.

The male honorable mention choices were Manny Nwosu (Dos Pueblos football), Jack Rottman (Santa Barbara High water polo), Dean Smith (Cate football) and Kyril Van Schendel (Cate cross country).

The female athletes receiving honorable mention accolades include Erica Schroeder (San Marcos cross country), Natalie McClure (San Marcos cross country), Bella Vigna (Dos Pueblos golf), Mallory Hromatko (UCSB soccer), Shannon Friend (SBCC volleyball), Tristen Thompson (SBCC volleyball) and Cheyenne Low (UCSB swimming).
