SBCC ran into a pair of women’s water polo powerhouses on Friday and dropped two games on the first day of the Mt. SAC Classic in Walnut.
The Vaqueros (5-3) fell to defending state champion Fullerton 16-5 in the morning game. The Hornets (6-0) built an 8-3 halftime lead, then outscored SBCC 6-1 in the third period. Mackenzie Perez and Reagan Mroz had two goals each for the Vaqueros. Goalie Demi Ames had four saves and four steals.
Tournament host Mt. San Antonio (8-0) took a 5-1 halftime advantage and held the Vaqueros scoreless in the second and third quarters on the way to a 12-2 victory. Maddie Brooks had three steals for the Vaqueros, who turned the ball over 25 times.
Santa Barbara will play two more in the Mt. SAC tourney on Saturday, taking on Long Beach at 9:10 a.m. and American River at 12:40 p.m.
