It took two overtimes and sudden death to decide Wednesday’s WSC women’s water polo showdown between conference leaders SBCC and L.A. Valley. After being tied 10-10 at the end of regulation, the Monarchs scored in the first OT and then in sudden death to edge the defending WSC champions 12-11 at Valley’s pool.
Mackenzie Perez scored a season-high four goals while Addison Seale had two goals and three steals for the Vaqueros, who dropped their fifth straight to fall to 5-6 overall and 2-1 in conference. Nicole Cosares and Kendra Carr added two goals apiece with Carr getting four drawn ejections.
The Monarchs improved to 7-3 and 3-0.
Reagan Mroz had three steals and Mackenzie Richards saved 12 shots and made four steals.
The Vaqueros led 6-3 after one period and 9-8 going into the fourth.
“I’m very proud of our team,” said coach Chuckie Roth. “We played extremely hard and came up a goal short. Win or lose, we battled and we enter into this weekend with a very competitive schedule. We look forward to our ability to grow together.”
The Vaqueros will play in the Cuesta Rabobank Tournament on Friday and Saturday, opening with Riverside and Orange Coast on Friday.
