Kendra Carr scored six goals on Saturday as SBCC knocked off Fresno City 9-7 and Merced 16-12 to finish 3-1 in the Central Coast Invitational women’s water polo tourney at Cuesta.
Carr, a freshman from Mill Valley, had four goals in the morning contest and two vs. Merced. Maddie Brooks, a sophomore from Carpinteria, had a team-high four goals in the second game.
Miriana Espinosa added two goals in the win over Fresno. Brooks had two assists and two steals for the Vaqueros (3-1). Nicole Cosares drew three ejections and goalie Mackenzie Richards made 10 saves.
In the win over Merced, Brooks scored a season-high four goals and Carr, Espinosa, Reagan Mroz and Rebekah Carey all chipped in with two. Richards had five saves and five steals. The Vaqueros outscored the Blue Devils 6-2 in the second quarter to take an 8-4 halftime lead.
“I was really proud of our team’s effort this weekend,” said second-year coach Chuckie Roth. “Kendra Carr had a very good weekend offensively. I thought our team defense improved throughout the weekend.
“This was a big change from last year’s 0-4 start. We’re excited to play our conference opener on Wednesday.”
They open defense of their WSC title on Wednesday with a 3:30 p.m. contest at Citrus in Glendora.
