GLF: Chang, SBCC reign at North-South Invitational

Carolin Chang shot even-par 72 on Monday and SBCC captured the North-South Invitational women’s golf title at Morro Bay Golf Course.

Chang, a freshman from Taiwan, was the medalist at 2-under 142. She beat the 98-player field by seven shots with Lexandra So (73-76) of Citrus taking second at 149. Deedra Dollesin of Sierra was third at 152.

Chang has shot par or better in six of the last seven rounds for Santa Barbara, which won its fifth tournament of the year to improve to 45-2.

Isabella Doub shot 80 and finished at 159 for the Vaqueros, who were 19 strokes better than WSC rival Citrus in the 17-team field that featured the top teams in California. SBCC shot 324, 10 strokes higher than the first round, for a 638 total. Citrus was second at 657, followed by Sierra (663), Reedley (665) and Canyons (669).

“We backed up a little with our score today but the bottom line is we won a tournament against the best of the best,” said Vaquero coach Chuck Melendez. “This gave us good tournament experience and we’ll be even better when Vanesa Villa returns (from injury).”

The tourney was a preview of the State Championships, which will also be held at Morro Bay GC in mid-November.

“Carolin played great and really carried us,” Melendez added. “I think this is the largest tourney we’ve ever played, in terms of number of teams and players.”

The Vaqueros return to conference action on Monday in WSC No. 4, hosted by Citrus at San Dimas GC.
