Lucas Pierce of the Santa Barbara Yacht Club placed fifth in his fleet at the Chubb U.S. Junior Sailing Championships in Osterville, Mass. on Thursday.
Pierce, a student at Santa Barbara High, competed in the Byte CII Singlehanded Championship, also known as the Smythe Trophy.
His best finish in the 10-race regatta on Nantucket Sound was a second on the last day of competition. He took third place in races 4 and 5 and finished the competition with a total of 48 points.
Sam Morell of the U.S. Virgin Islands St. Thomas Yacht Club won the championship with 20 points, edging out Joseph Hou of Newport Harbor YC who had 22 points. Gerard Eastman (Seawanhaka Corinthian YC) and Jack Bitney (Minnetonka Yacht Club) were third and fourth with 43 and 44 points, respectively.
