Hancock-Nestlerode capture CBVA Masters title

The team of John Hancock and Tim Nestlerode came through for the local entries in Saturday’s California Beach Volleyball Association Masters Championships at windy East Beach.

Hancock/Nestlerode were the only local team to claim a title, capturing the 45-54 age division over Chris Bell (Ventura) and Mark Foreman (Santa Barbara) in a three-set final, 21-10, 19-21, 15-12.

The three men’s division champions and one women’s division winner were award custom-made Yater surfboards and other prizes.

In the 37-44 final, Jack Quinn (El Segundo) and Nicolas Barron (Ventura) had more gas in the tank and defeated the local duo of Chad Arneson and Matt Riley, 21-15, 21-12.

In the 55-over final, Jeff Rydberg (second from right) and Jim Harmon defeated Ed Gibbs and Matt Bergdahl.

The Men’s 55-plus title went to Jeff Rydberg (Camarillo) and Jim Harmon (Ventura). The former partners showed they still have good chemistry and defeated Ed Gibbs (Newport Beach) and Matt Bergdahl (Aspen), 21-15, 21-12.

The team of Marla O’Hara (Oxnard) and Vladia Vignato (L.A.) captured the women’s title with a three-set win over Jackie Campbell (Santa Barbara) and Ilga Celmins (Aptos), 19-21 21-12, 15-10. O’Hara said it was the first time she and Vignato played together in a tournament.

The women’s finalist were Jackie Campbell, Marla O’Hara, Vladia Vignato and Ilga Celmins. O’Hara-Vignato won the title.  The winning teams were awarded custom-made Yater surfboards.
