GLF: Patton is medalist, SBCC finishes 2nd at WSC Championships

SBCC’s Brett Patton fired two rounds of 70 to earn medalist honors in the WSC Championships on Monday and Joakim Flinck was two strokes back in second place in the final regular-season men’s golf event at Rancho Vista GC in Palmdale.

The teams played 36 holes and Canyons won with identical 363 rounds for a 726 total. The Cougars beat SBCC by one shot in the first round and two shots in the second. Canyons and SBCC had already clinched spots in next Monday’s Southern Cal Regional at Olivas Links in Ventura.
Ventura finished third at 749 and grabbed the final team berth in the Regional.

Patton, a sophomore from Dos Pueblos High, shot 4-under 140 on an extremely windy day with gusts up to 40 mph. Flinck, a sophomore from Sweden, shot 70 and 72 for a 2-under 142.

Patton was the second-leading scorer in conference this year and was named first-team All-WSC, along with Manny Manzone (3rd in WSC) and Flinck (6th). Jaren McCartney (73-75) added a 148 for the Vaqueros.

“It was really windy at times and then it would get calm,” said SBCC coach Chuck Melendez. “The course fitted us well with long hitters getting rewarded. I was happy with our focus.

“Brett played excellent and Joakim is really coming on (with 4 of his last 5 rounds under par). I think our conference is the best in the state.”

Canyons topped the eight-team WSC standings at 74-3. SBCC was second at 64-13.
