Dons split sand matches in tough conditions

Playing in miserable conditions, the Santa Barbara High girls sand volleyball team split its matches against Arroyo Grande and Santa Ynez at Ventura Harbor on Saturday.

The Dons lost 2-1 against Arroyo Grande and came back to beat Santa Ynez 2-1.

Coach John Gannon said the teams played in 25 mph winds and driving rain.

“These were absolutely the toughest conditions I have ever seen at a beach volleyball tournament,” said Gannon.

Erika Foreman and Rose Lebow were able to brave the elements to post a 2-0 record on the day.

“Their tough serves and strong ball control led them to victory. Lebow did a great job stepping in for injured freshmen Linnea Skinner, and showed resilience battling throughout the day,” said Gannon.

Ally Drevo and Zoe Maritorena ended up 1-1 on the day. After a tough loss to Arroyo Grande, they were able to step up their play and pulled out a close two-set victory over Santa Ynez.

Tatum Vedder and Cassandra Amador dropped both of their matches.
