Fifteen straight and 50 out of 51.

Santa Barbara High’s boys tennis team extended its remarkable streak of Channel League titles on Tuesday with a 13-5 victory at Dos Pueblos.

The Dons are 6-0 in the league standings with two matches remaining. They can clinch the title outright with a victory on Wednesday against Ventura. Dos Pueblos falls to 5-2.

Santa Barbara led 5-1 after the first round but the Chargers split the second round to close the gap. The Dons closed out the match strong winning five of the last six sets.

“Our guys had to earn every set we won today. I expected nothing less against our cross town rival,” reported Dons head coach Greg Tebbe. “Our team has played a lot of matches over the past couple of weeks and I am very proud that these guys have earned the Channel League title. There is a great tradition with Santa Barbara High School tennis and these players have added their own chapter now to that legacy and they can be very proud of that.”

Key wins for the Dons were Max Mercurio’s 7-5 singles result and a 7-6 doubles decision won by Tyler Greenwald and Jake Sutton. The Dons were led by Jackson Powell’s undefeated day in singles and another 3-0 performance by doubles duo Taggart Mills and Harry deBoer.

Dos Pueblos’ No. 1 positions were 4-2 on the day. Joshua Wang claimed 2 of 3 in singles and the doubles team of Miles Baldwin and Vincent Villano did the same. The Chargers were without injured No. 1 Patrick Corpuz.

“I’m proud of our Chargers who played gutsy and fiery and showed great improvement from the last time we played this powerhouse team,” said Chargers head coach Liz Frech.

Santa Barbara, ranked No. 7 in CIF Division 1, is 12-2 and hosts Ventura on Wednesday before an appearance at the Ojai Invitational on Thursday and Friday.

Dos Pueblos falls to 12-5 on the season.
