BVB: Royals sweep Oxnard in Newton’s coaching debut

San Marcos made Jon Newton a winner in his debut as the Royals boys volleyball coach on Tuesday night, sweeping Oxnard, 26-24, 25-21, 25-17.

Outside hitters Ben Hauschild and Jake Pighetti led the Royals’ attack with 11 and 9 kills, respectively.

Newton is a 2009 San Marcos graduate. He played college volleyball at Ohio State.

“I’m pretty excited to get the opportunity to coach this team in an actual game,” he said of the season opener. ”It’s finally nice to see them on the court.”

The Royals are back in action Wednesday at Santa Ynez before heading to the Redondo Union Tournament over the weekend.
