SAN DIEGO – UCSB opened the final day of the Triton Invitational with a lopsided 10-5 victory over Santa Clara and a narrow 6-4 loss to Michigan.
The Gauchos are now an even 6-6 on the season, as they went 2-2 in tournament play.
Camila Schafer and Sophie Trabucco paced the Gauchos with three goals on the day, while Samantha Murphy and Taylor Shore each added two goals.
Next up for UCSB is the Fresno Pacific Tournament. The team will head north this coming weekend and will face off against Concordia University and San Diego State.
SANTA CLARA
After a slow start, No. 18 UCSB found its rhythm as they took control in the second half cruising to a 10-5 victory over the Santa Clara Broncos at the UCSD Triton Invitational on Sunday.
UCSB’s Sophie Trabucco led all scorers with three goals, while Camila Schafer added two for the Gauchos.
Santa Barbara struck first twenty seconds into the match with a goal by Delaney Riley. Santa Clara responded with two straight goals including a score with seven seconds remaining in the opening quarter by Julia Peters putting the Broncos up 2-1.
The Gauchos weren’t fazed as they were poised to make a run. Santa Barbara ensued in dominating fashion.
After halftime, UCSB found its stride outscoring Santa Clara 5-0 in the third amidst an 8-1 run giving the Gauchos a comfortable 9-3 lead heading into the final quarter of play.
The Broncos attempted a comeback scoring the first two goals in the fourth. However, UCSB’s large lead proved insurmountable in the end as the Gauchos won their second straight victory in two days.
Camila Schafer has now scored two goals in two straight matches and leads the Gauchos in overall scoring with 18 goals on the year.
MICHIGAN
UCSB’s last match at the Triton Invitational came against No. 17 Michigan where they held the lead multiple times but eventually fell in a 6-4 loss.
Junior Samantha Murphy placed the Gauchos on the scoreboard first early in the game, as she netted the only goal for either team in the first quarter.
The following eight minutes displayed a tale of two different quarters. Michigan answered back with its own goal at the 4:53 mark, which was then met by a Taylor Shore goal a minute later. The Wolverines once more tied the game up after a shot by Allison Skaggs met the back of the net. UCSB would refuse to enter halftime deadlocked with Michigan, as a Jenna Solberg goal took back the advantage for a 3-2 score.
The start of the second half would turn into another lull for both teams. The lone goal in the quarter came from Michigan’s Elizabeth Williams in the first minute. This would even the score yet again and create a dramatic final quarter.
Wolverine Kelly Martin scored her first of two goals in the quarter at the 7:15 mark, giving her team its first lead of the game. But the lead would be short lived, as Camila Schafer came away with the equalizer for the Gauchos just a few minutes later. The Wolverines would get their go-ahead goal seconds later and followed up by tacking on another goal. UCSB would fail to net any more goals, resulting in a 6-4 final score.
The loss places UCSB at an even 6-6 record. Taylor Shore, Camila Schafer, Jenna Solberg, and Samantha Murphy each had their own goal in the match. Defensively, goalkeeper Mackenzie Brokaw kept it close for her team as she had three saves.
