WRS: DP’s Coronado repeats as league champ; Chargers win 8 titles

Jonathan Coronado repeated as champion and sophomores Ryan Fidel and William Fader joined five other Dos Pueblos wrestlers as first-time champions at the Channel League Championships on Saturday at Sovine Gym.

The Chargers advanced 11 wrestlers to the finals and 13 of 14 qualified for the CIF Section Finals. Senior Jeffy Uyesaka was named the lower weight outstanding wrestler. He scored a 4-0 decision over Ventura’s Justin Ledesma in the 138-pound final. Uyesaka lost a one-point decision to Ledesma in the league dual meet.

“Jeffy wrestled a very smart and stuck to the game plan,” DP coach Anthony Califano said. “He didn’t give up any early takedowns. He scored a takedown in the first period and a reversal in the third to win. It will help his seed at CIF.”

Patrick Konkol also avenged a one-point loss against a Ventura wrestler to win the 195-pound weight class. Konkol defeated Abunduz in double overtime, 2-1.

Fidel dominated the 106 weight class to win his first league title. In the final, he was leading Buena’s D’Angelo Jones 5-2 when Jones suffered an injury with 30 seconds left in the third period and was unable continue.

DP’s Jose Murillo followed win a pin against San Marcos’ Adan Alvaro at the 5:05 mark in the 113-pound final.

Blair Middleton crushed his opposition to win the 126-pound title. He pinned Carlos Barrera of San Marcos in the semifinals and defeated Buena’s Morkos in the final by a major decision, 9-1.

At 132 pounds, Cameron Cox suffered a tough 2-1 loss to Ventura’s Luke Tada in the final. Tada scored a late takedown for the deciding points. Cox was seeking to win his third straight league title.

“I think (the loss) will motivate Cameron heading to CIF next weekend,” said DP coach Anthony Califano.

Cox pinned Adam Manchester of San Marcos in the semifinals.

Jason Hu won the 145-pound title with a 9-2 decision over Ventura’s Christopher Reyes-Vizcarra.

Coronado pinned Buena’s Brady Yarbrough 15 seconds into the second period to capture the 160-pound weight class championship for his second straight league title.

Fader capped an unbeaten league season by defeating Buena’s Isaac Torres, 7-2, to win the gold medal in the 285-pound class. Fader reached the final by pinning Anthony Hernandez of San Marcos.

Other runner-up finishers for DP included Gama Perez (120 pounds) and Diego Lopez (170). Third-place finishers were Gabriel Michel (152) and Michael Schmidt (182). Also qualifying for CIF was Damien Pennington, who was fourth at 220 pounds.
