UCSB puts on record-breaking performance at MPSF Championships

LOS ANGELES – After a second day of competition at East Los Angeles College the Gauchos have certainly made their mark at MPSF Championships with two first-place finishes, a new school record, and a total of 272.5 points that contributed to the overall UC Santa Barbara score.

In the first event of the evening, Heren Alanis (4:54.54) battled against a tough heat in the women’s 500 freestyle for a fifth place finish.

In the men’s 500 freestyle, three Gauchos placed in the top eight of the championship heat. Freshman Billy Mullis (4:27.45) took third, followed by Armen Darbinyan (4:29.73) in fifth and Matt Drum (4:29.82) in sixth.

Katie Records (2:01.20) took home the first Gaucho individual race victory with a win in the women’s 200 IM. Freshman Alyssa Shew (2:04.38) took eighth in the event.

The men’s 200 IM championship heat featured three Gauchos once again, with Andy Castilleja (1:47.74) taking third, Dylan Kubick (1:47.75) fourth, and Simon Wong (1:52.41) eighth. Castilleja’s time set a new UCSB school record.

Lauren Vosseler (23.05) had a career-best time in the women’s 50 freestyle, taking second in the event. Kimmie Kreuzberger placed sixth with a time of 23.73.

Wade Allen (19.72) brought home the second Gaucho individual victory with his win in the men’s 50 freestyle. Although this time wasn’t his personal best, he was the only person in the pool to break 20 seconds. Chase Lemley (20.39) followed in fifth and Yoessef Tibazi (20.95) in eighth.

For the 200 freestyle relays both the men and women’s teams placed second. The women’s “A” team (1:32.13) consisted of Kimmie Kreuzberger (23.67), Julia Mikota (22.83), Charis Hoppe (23.48), and Lauren Vosseler (22.15).

The men’s “A” team (1:20.69) featured swims from Wade Allen (19.88), Josh Smith (20.55), Clayton Young (20.39), and Chase Lemley (19.87).

Tomorrow the Gauchos will compete in the 400 IM, 100 butterfly, 200 freestyle, 100 breaststroke, 100 backstroke, and the 400 medley relay.
