San Marcos didn’t allow Newport Harbor to score in the second half of Saturday’s CIF Division 1 quarterfinal, but the Sailors still managed to hold on for a 5-4 victory.
Neither team scored in the fourth quarter although San Marcos’ Paige Hauschild had a goal waived off in the final minute because of an offensive foul.
Megan Bergthold led the Royals with two goals while Riley Heiduk and Hailey Gellert added a score each. Newport Harbor’s Carlee Kapana made 12 saves defending the cage.
San Marcos, which finishes its season with a 23-8 record, went unbeaten in the Channel League this season to earn a league championship.
“As a coach, I’m so proud of the way we played today. We have shown tremendous growth throughout the season,” said Royals head coach Chuckie Roth.
Newport Harbor advances to Wednesday’s semifinals to face Foothill. No. 1 Laguna Beach and Corona del Mar will play in the other semi.
