Super Saturday showcases soccer rivalry

The Super Saturday Showdown between San Marcos and Santa Barbara is all about soccer. Almost 12 hours of it.

The Royals and Dons are playing six rivalry games against each other at Peabody Stadium this Saturday, starting at 10 a.m. and ending sometime around 9 p.m. with the completion of the boys varsity game.

The boys varsity begins at 7 p.m. following the girls varsity clash that is scheduled to kick off at 5 p.m. The lower level teams are also playing in the stadium. The girls frosh/soph game is at 10 a.m. and the boys at 11:30. Then it’s the JV teams with the girls at 1 p.m. and the boys at 2:30 p.m.

Santa Barbara High’s boys varsity is ranked No. 5 in CIF Division 1. The Dons (12-3-4, 2-1-0), coming off a 1-0 win vs. Ventura, beat the Royals 3-1 in the first meeting between the two teams.

The San Marcos girls varsity edged the Dons 1-0 in their first matchup on January 9. Both teams will be hungry for this one after losing their previous league games.

The full-day event is a fundraiser for both of the high school’s soccer programs. Ticket prices are $5 for the general public and $3 for children.
