BBK: Royals get clutch play down stretch, beat CdM

Scott Everman scored back-to-back baskets in overtime, lifting San Marcos to a 41-38 boys basketball win over Corona del Mar in a Division 3 Showcase at San Juan Hills High in San Juan Capistrano on Saturday night.

The Royals got a huge lift from senior Luke Larson, who was called on to replace starting point guard Ryan McCarthy in the third quarter after McCarthy was scratched in the eye. Larsen hit consecutive 3-pointers to put the Royals in the lead.

“It was awesome to see Luke come in and make a big difference with his shooting ability,” San Marcos coach Landon Boucher said. “His effort has been consistent all year, it was good to see that effort pay off tonight.”

Kele Mkpado played big for the Royals down the stretch.

“He grabbed eight big rebounds and took a charge in OT that might of been the biggest play of the game,” said Boucher. “Corona del Mar was a very good team that was well coached. I’m proud of how our boys battled tonight.”

Everman led all scorers with 18 points.

San Marcos (11-4) returns home on Tuesday to face Rio Mesa.
