SBCC has been seeded No. 10 for the Southern Cal Regional women’s water polo tournament and will take on No. 7 Long Beach City on Thursday at noon at Citrus College in Glendora.
The Vaqueros (16-12) won the WSC Tournament last week at Citrus by beating Santa Monica 9-2, Ventura 7-5 and L.A. Valley 9-5 for the championship. SBCC has won three straight and is 10-2 in its last 12 games.
It’s just the fourth time that a first-year program won a WSC title. The other three were the 1992 SBCC men’s soccer team (coached by Tim Vom Steeg, who’s had great success at UCSB); the 1996 Ventura women’s soccer team and the 2012 L.A. Pierce women’s water polo squad.
Rocio Fesembeck, a freshman from Santa Barbara High, paced SBCC with five goals in the WSC final. She leads the WSC in scoring with 96 goals in 27 matches (3.6 average).
Santa Barbara dropped its first-ever women’s water polo match to Long Beach 12-10 on Sept. 5 at the Cypress Tournament. The Vaqueros also fell to the Vikings 12-4 on Sept. 27.
SBCC coach Chuckie Roth says his team is playing its best polo of the year right now and he likes their chances in the regional.
If the Vaqueros win, they’ll take on No. 2 seed Riverside City on Friday at 11:30 a.m.
