Owls give No. 1 Thacher a fight before falling

Laguna Blanca was pumped up and ready to take on No. 1-ranked Thacher. The Owls jumped out to an 18-6 lead in the first quarter and we’re looking strong.

Then injuries started to mount, and Thacher stepped up its game and rolled to a 60-24 win at Laguna in the Condor League 8-man football finale on Saturday.

The loss leaves the Owls at 1-3 in league and 5-3 overall. They still have hopes of receiving an at-large bid to the CIF playoffs.

Senior quarterback Stephen McCaffery played a solid game for Laguna. He rushed for 139 yards and two touchdowns and passed for two scores. Pierce O’Donnell caught the first TD pass, which gave the Owls an 18-6 lead.

Laguna Blanca started losing players to injuries and its lead began to dwindle. Thacher went ahead 20-18, but McCaffery brought the Owls back, hitting Ryan Bickett for a TD pass to put them back up, 24-20.

The Toads then exploded for 28 unanswered points before halftime and pulled away.
