In-Game Updates: Dos Pueblos at San Marcos Football

PRE-GAME INTRO: Dos Pueblos (1-7, 0-2) travels to San Marcos (2-5, 0-1) tonight in the second of three games that will decide the City Championship.

Goleta Valley bragging rights are also on the line as both teams look to bounce back from losses last week. Dos Pueblos suffered a heartbreaking defeat against Santa Barbara in overtime while San Marcos was routed by Ventura.

The Royals are seeking their first win against Dos Pueblos since 2009.

FOURTH QUARTER

Final Score: San Marcos 27, Dos Pueblos 10. San Marcos improves to 1-1 in league play while Dos Pueblos falls to 0-3. Check back later for post-game story with player and coaches quotes.

1:11 – Touchdown San Marcos! Ivan Reyes punches is it in for his third touchdown of the day, putting this game just out of reach for the Dos Pueblos Chargers. The score is now 27-10.

1:37 – San Marcos has the ball on the 12-yard line with a first down. Dos Pueblos’ Erik Botello is slow to get up.

2:11 – Ivan Reyes powers his way to the Chargers 13-yard line. That is a 14-yard pick up on the play.

3:25 – A charger is down on the field and is currently being tended to by the training staff. #34 limps off the field.

4:26 – Roberts is sacked! Nath Coffey comes up big for the Royals. The Chargers turn the ball over with an incomplete deep toward the sideline after San Marcos forced them to 4th and 22. San Marcos takes over on Dos Pueblos’ 41-yard line.

5:33 – Roberts goes long and pass interference is called against San Marcos. The Chargers advance to their own 40-yard line. Two consecutive incompletions now brings up 3rd down and fifteen.

5:45 – San Marcos was able to drive the ball all the way to the Chargers 45-yard line but was stopped short of the first down on 4th and 4. Dos Pueblos will retain possession and will try and and shorten the deficit to a one-posession game with Roberts leading the offense.

6:50 – Dos Pueblos kicks off and San Marcos will start their drive around the 25-yard line.

7:40 – And they do! Roberts hits Josh Flora in the back of the endzone for the Chargers first touchdown of the game. Flora got both of his feet in and the away crowd roared. The score is now 20-10, Dos Pueblos is back in this one.

7:48 – Dos Pueblos calls a timeout. The Chargers face 4th and 10 still on the 20 yard line. They have to convert if they want to stay in this game.

8:50 – Kellen Roberts is now checked back into the game, and making a difference. Roberts threw to Angel Davison for a 21-yard pick up. The Chargers are on the 20-yard line, looking to get their first touchdown of the game.

11:06 – Dos Pueblos turned the ball over with a fumble after Burnes found Blake Erwin for a 37-yard connection up the sideline. While the Chargers’ offense was still distraught on the sideline, San Marcos turned around and lost possession with a fumble of their own. The Chargers recovered the ball and now have possession again on the 50-yard line.

12:00 – San Marcos punts and the Chargers will start their drive on the 10-yard line.

THIRD QUARTER

1:18 – San Marcos has amde a point to give the stands a heart attack as they have fumbled the ball on two consecutive plays, both however ended in recoveries. It is now 4th and 18. End of third quarter.

2:00 – Fumble! Dos Pueblos misses the snap and the Royals’ defensive line is quick to dive on it. They will take over at the Chargers’ 30-yard line.

2:45 – Dos Pueblos will starts its drive on the 25-yard line with Roberts still set in the quarterback position.

3:00 – The Royals fail to capitalize on a redzone opportunity and settle for a field goal after the Chargers forced them into a 4th and 5 situation. San Marcos extends its lead to 20-3.

4:25 – After being backed up to 3rd and 16, the Royals crucially broke out for a huge 26-yard pass to D’shaun Vines to set up San Marcos on the 15-yard line.

8:21 – The Chargers will start their drive on the 18-yard line. Kellen Roberts has stepped in as quarterback for this drive. Roberts has been in and out of the game in the first half, alternating with Burnes. San Marcos forces a three-and out-after a near interception. The Royals will now start their drive on the 50-yard line.

8:51 – Ivan Reyes runs it in on the 1-yard line for the second touchdown of the game! The drive started with a couple short runs and Reid saved the drive with a 13-yard run. Inri Cortez blasted through a hole, broke multiple tackles, and ran it all the way the 4-yard line to set up the touchdown. The score is now 17-3.

11:55 – Dos Pueblos kicks off to start the third quarter. Coffey returns to the Royals own 41-yard line.

SECOND QUARTER

1:48 – Burnes is sacked on second down to bring up 3rd down and 15. Malik Harris breaks out for a 14-yard run, and is tackled just short of the first down. The Chargers punt. Halftime.

1:20 – San Marcos Touchdown! Sage Reid connects with Inri Cortez for a stunning 29-yard touchdown pass up the middle. A few plays prior, Reyes set up the touchdown with a long run up the sideline. The Chargers will start their drive on the 20 -yard line. The score is now 10-3. 

1:49 – San Marcos forces a quick three and out and will now start their drive on the Chargers 45-yard line.

3:18 – San Marcos’ Andres Martinez blew open for a huge run to kick off the drive. On third down, Sage Reid had the crowd on their feet with a 35-yard passing attempt to Joseph Estrada who was unable to hold on. San Marcos punts and the Chargers will start their drive on the 21-yard line.

9:01 – San marcos sacks Burnes to force a turnover on downs. The Chargers began the drive with a shovel pass to Pearce for a 20-yard gain. The Chargers converted twice on fourth down and the second conversion was a 24-yard reception reception on a deep slant. However the Royals were able to stop the drive on the 35-yard line. San Marcos will kick off their drive at the spot of the sack.

9:44 – Barrett Burnes attempts a quarterback sneak on 3rd down and 1. The referees walk out with the chains to mark the spot. It is deemed short by just an inch. That will bring up fourth down forth the Chargers.

10:53 – San Marcos’ Inri Cortex is shaken up on the play and is walked off by the athletic trainers.

11:52 – Dos Pueblos will start their drive on the 20-yard line. A complication has risen, the referees seemingly have forgotten to switch sides of the field a the start of the second quarter. The Chargers will still start on the 20-yard line.

FIRST QUARTER

End of Quarter – San Marcos is about to punt from their own 49-yard line. A long kickoff return by Coffey gave the Royals good field position but San Marcos failed to pick up a first down.

2:32 – Dos Pueblos ties the game with a field goal after a pass from Burnes fell right threw the hands of Austen Pearce. A previous 15-yard penalty brought the Chargers into striking distance of the endzone. An estimated 60-yard punt return by Josh Flora set up the Chargers drive. The score is now 3-3.

4:23 – San Marcos puts the first points on the board after a 44-yard drive ended in a 28-yard field goal kicked by Nathan Coffey. Running back Ivan Reyes led the drive with two first downs. A defensive penalty on 4th down hurt the Chargers as it brought San Marcos to the 19-yard line. The score is now 3-0.

10:22 – San Marcos forces a quick three-and-out after the Royals came up with a huge sack on quarterback Barrett Burnes on second down. The sack was followed by a short pass to Josh Flora. Dos Peublos punted and San Marcos now starts their drive on their own 45-yard line.

11:54 – San Marcos kicks off to Dos Pueblos. The Chargers will start their drive at the 12-yard line.

12:00 – Kickoff scheduled for 7 p.m. at San Marcos High School
