GLF: SBCC golfers advance to regionals

SBCC shaved 15 strokes off its first-round total and claimed second place in the WSC Women’s Golf Championships on Monday at par-75 Brookside GC in Pasadena.

The Vaqueros shot 372 to finish second in WSC No. 8 to league champion Canyons. The Cougars went 32-0 in conference matches and SBCC was second at 21-11.

Santa Barbara, the defending state champion, edged out Citrus for the second and final qualifying spot to the Southern Cal Regional with a 36-hole total of 759. Citrus shot 388 on Monday and finished 11 strokes behind the Vaqueros. Canyons won the two-day WSC Championships at 682.

Saralisa Ortega led the Vaqueros with an 8-over 83 while Tiffany Huang and Stella Dulay shot 96. Laine Johnson and Nicole Reynolds carded 97.

Ortega, the fifth-best scorer in the WSC, and Johnson (No. 10) were named first-team All-WSC. Reynolds, who shot 96 and 97, also qualified for the Regional as an individual.

“All but one of our players shot better than they did on Sunday, so that was excellent,” said coach Chuck Melendez. “We played well today and had a great response to adversity.”

Five teams will compete in the Regional with the top two moving on to the State Final 4. The Southern Cal Regional will be held Nov. 10-11 at Temecula Creek Inn.
