Cate goalie Sam Furmanski made 16 saves, helping the Rams hold off Carpinteria 11-10 in a boys water polo match on Monday.
Senior co-captain Will Hogue came out of the gates firing, scoring three goals from up top in the first quarter to spark an early Cate comeback after being down 2-1. It was the only time the Rams would trail.
Cate scored a momentum-building goal with one second left in the half to take a critical 6-5 lead going into the third quarter. The Rams stretched their lead to 9-6 and then 10-7 before a Carpinteria run made it 10-9.
The Rams earned a crucial penalty shot in the fourth quarter with senior co-captain Zack Allen cooly slotting it home to up the lead at 11-9.
Carpinteria scored with 1:01 remaining before Cate ran out the clock and sealed the victory.
Alex Brown scored four goals to lead Cate.
Cate (6-4) travels down the hill to face Carpinteria again on Wednesday at 3:15 p.m.
