A 5-0 run in a decisive third quarter on Wednesday led Cate’s boys water polo team to a 11-9 victory over Pioneer Valley.
Nine of Cate’s goals came from Alex Brown, with six, and Zach Allen, with three.
Along with Duffy Montgomery, Brown and Allen led the third-quarter surge that gave Cate a 10-5 lead. Pioneer Valley had started the game grabbing a 3-0 lead of its own.
But Brown fouled out and Pioneer Valley clawed back to 10-9. PV benefitted from a 13-4 exclusion advantage.
Cate goalie Sam Furmanski stopped several shots in the fourth quarter to help preserve the lead. Allen scored with 28 seconds remaining to give Cate a two-goal lead.
“Despite the loss of Brown, they stuck together and didn’t get rattled even in the end. The win was the toughest of the preseason,” reported Cate head coach Nathan Alldredge.
Cate improves to 4-0 on the season.
