Freshman Shane Hauschild scored the first goal of the season for UCSB, and the recent San Marcos graduate finished with four goals on the day to lead the Gauchos to a pair of victories on Saturday at the Triton Invitational water polo tournament at UC San Diego.
The Gauchos dominated Redlands 14-3 and later defeated Pomona Pitzer 15-6.
Hauschild was an All-CIF water polo and volleyball player at San Marcos. He tallied his first collegiate goal at 7:34 of the first period against Redlands. The Gauchos scored seven straight goals to open the match.
The Bulldogs tallied their first goal at the 5:24 mark in the third quarter. After three minutes of defensive pressure and no goals, the Gauchos broke the silence with a goal from junior, Chase Racich, a Dos Pueblos alum.
Entering the final period with an 8-2 lead, UCSB maintained its offensive pressure; bursting out for a total of six goals in the final period. The goals came from Samer Alkateb, Bryan Snyder, Josh Jordan, Tor Jensen, Brendan McElroy, and Kevin Cappon. McElroy is a Santa Barbara alum and Cappon is from Dos Pueblos.
Against Pomona Pitzer, UCSB opened the floodgates with four opening period goals from Cappon, Nicholas Jordan, Liam Gaughan, and Eric Van de Mortel.
The second period showcased plenty of attack as the two teams combined for a total of eight goals. Hauschild netted two goals while juniors, Ryan Baliani and Racich scored one goal apiece. Sophomore, Thomas Martinho also recorded a goal to give the Gauchos a 9-3 lead at halftime.
