UCSB’s men’s water polo team finished out a weekend in San Diego at the Triton Invite by losing to Cal 9-6 before rebounding in a 12-7 victory over UC Davis on Sunday.
The Gauchos, ranked No. 7 in the NCAA, are 3-1 after their season-opening weekend.
Eric Van de Mortel led UCSB in scoring against No. 4 Cal with two goals. The Bears grabbed a 3-0 lead in the first quarter and never trailed.
The Gauchos fell behind against UC Davis in the first period but rallied and gained control by outscoring the Aggies 5-1 in the second quarter.
USC, UCLA, Long Beach State, Cal, and UC Irvine went undefeated in the four-game mixer.
The Gauchos travel to Pepperdine on Thursday before hosting UC San Diego on Saturday in their home opener.
