Stamatia Scarvelis of Dos Pueblos completed one of the greatest careers for a county prep track and field athlete by three-peating in the shot put and capturing her first discus title at the CIF State Championships at Veterans Memorial Stadium in Clovis.
The UCLA=bound Scarvelis, who graduated from Dos Pueblos on Thursday, became the first girl to double in the throws at the State Meet since Anna Jelmini of Shafter in 2009. She also is the first athlete since Fullerton’s Natalie Kaaiawahia in the 1980s to win three straight shot put titles. Kaaiawahia won four times.
The Scarvelis family has actually won four straight state shot put championships. Before Stamatia’s three run year, her brother, Nicholas, won the boys title in 2011.
Stamatia Scarvelis was the class of the field in both throwing events. In the shot put, her winning mark was 52-02. She went over 50 feet on three of her six throws (50-2, 51-4.50, 52-2). She was so dominant that her opening throw of 48-08 would have won the event.
Mackenna Howard of Los Alamitos finished second at 47-10 and Ginika Iwuchukwu of Notre Dame, Sherman Oaks was third at 46-1.50
Scarvelis won the discus at 163-07. The winning mark came on her third throw. Hannah Chappell of Oakdale finished second at 147-11 and Kendall Mader of Newbury Park was third at 147-04.
Lompoc’s Chrisshnay Brown placed eighth at 137-06.
