BVB: Vignolo carries Laguna to first-round sweep

Andrew Vignolo was an unstoppable force in the middle for the Laguna Blanca boys volleyball team in its CIF Division 5 opener against Orangewood Academy.

Vignolo hammered 15 kills on 17 attempts with no errors, leading the Owls to a 25-15, 25-18, 25-14 sweep over the visitors from Garden Grove on Tuesday at Merovik Gym.

“In my opinion, that was one of the finest middle attacking performances I have seen as a player or a coach,” Laguna coach Dillan Bennett said. “V carried the offensive load for us tonight, and is hungry to keep driving the team forward in the playoffs.” He had a hitting percentage of .880.

Freshman middle Jack Copeland, playing in the first playoff match of his career, was solid, posting 4 kills on 6 attempts, hitting .600 and adding two blocks. Ryan Bickett had 18 digs and passed a 2.8 on serve receive.

The Owls, who have won 12 straight and are 19-3 on the season, will play the winner of Pacifica Christian and St. Bernard on Thursday. Location will be determined Wednesday morning.
