Gaucho Gauntlet adventure race on Saturday

The UCSB Adventure Programs will be running people through the gauntlet on Saturday.

The Gaucho Gauntlet, an adventure race consisting of multiple activities such as running, biking, kayaking, climbing, slacklining, and rappelling, will take place on Saturday, May 17 on the UCSB campus from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. The event is open to the public.

Registration is $60 for students and $90 for non-students. Participants can enter to race solo or as a two-person team. Team members must register individually.

Each racer is required to provide their own bicycle suitable for road and trail, helmet, closed-toed shoes, water and bag for supplies. The initial check in site will be at the race headquarters, located at Pavillion Lawn inside the UCSB Recreation Center.

“Inspiration for the gauntlet came from similar adventure races and obstacle courses such as The Tough Mudder,” Department of Recreation Climbing Program Coordinator Laura Bylund said. “I noticed that the Santa Barbara area did not have any similar events and wanted to provide a race of comparable quality to the community for a more economical price.”

Single and team racers will be placed into separate brackets for race standings. There will be three legs of the race, each with a set order of activities to separate participants. Trained staff and medical personnel will be present at each checkpoint and along the race path. Staff members will be able to provide basic training for activities if necessary.

The race course will primarily go through the UCSB campus, Isla Vista, and the surrounding Goleta area.

Although no experience is necessary, racers must be 18 or older to participate.
