BTen: Singles carry Owls to first-round victory

Laguna Blanca won seven singles sets and swept at No. 1 doubles in beating Cajon 11-7 in a CIF Division 4 boys tennis playoff match on Wednesday.

“Singles looked really solid,” said Laguna coach Trevor Thorpe. “Tristan Prinz, Phillip Hicks, and Ben Furukawa are all in great form right now and that’s just what we’re going to need in the next round against Corona/Centennial. I know they’ve got two very strong singles players so that will be a test.”

Henry Farrell and Martin Barnick went 3-0 at No. 1 doubles for the Owls and Atty Roddick and Jack Espy added a victory at No. 3 doubles.

“Henry and Martin are also looking great and played three excellent sets today. They’ve come a long way this season and were starting to be able to count on them at the No. 1 spot,” said Thorpe.

Laguna Blanca plays at ninth-ranked Centennial in Corona on Friday.
