The 95th Russell Cup was held at Carpinteria High School on Saturday, attracting several dozen schools with enrollments under 1,500. It’s the longest-running small-schools track & field meet in California.

Paraclete won the boys varsity team competition while the girls teams from St. Joseph and Oak Park tied for first.

Standout performances included Oaks Christian’s Malik Cyphers, who placed second in the 100 and 200 meters. Paraclete swept both those races, with Triston Brown out front in the 100 with a wind-aided time of 11.02. Teammate James Holland won the 200 in 22.16 and was second in the long jump.. Paraclete won the boys 4×100 relay by more than a second with a time of 43.31.

Cate sophomore Joel Serugo, competing at the varsity level, would have broken the Russell Cup frosh/soph record in the triple jump with a distance of 43 feet and 6 1/4 inches. The frosh/soph record of 42′ 7 3/4″ by Valley Christian’s Cameron Cochrell in 2005.

Valley Christian’s Rataeja Sholes won three events in the girls varsity competition. Sholes beat the field in the 100 meters, 100 hurdles and high jump. Nipomo’s Kyra Meko was a double-winner in the 800 and 1600 meters.
