BVB: Chargers get defensive in win over Ventura

Tough serving and solid back-row defense led the Dos Pueblos boys volleyball team to a 25-13, 25-21, 25-12 sweep over Ventura in a Channel League match Thursday at Sovine Gym.

The Chargers improve to 5-2 overall and 3-0 in league.

Matt Sessler led DP with 13 kills on 24 attempts. Eli Wopat got 5 kills on 7 attempts and sophomore Elliot Brainerd added 3 kills on 4 attempts, two blocks, and two aces.

Mark Raphael handed out 32 assists and was lethal from the service line.

DP coach Ehren Hug praised the play of Jack Skjervem and Jeffery Araki.

“They really stepped up tonight and passed, served, and dug well,” Hug said. “Our well-formed block made it easy for Jack, Jeffery and the rest of the back row to dig and earn points. We really played great defensively tonight and I’m super proud of the team effort we put forth.

“The boys are hustling and having fun.”
